Top strip

Windshield

A strip can run across the top of the windshield, down to the AS-1 line marked on the glass or 5 inches from the top, whichever is closer to the top. Film and glass together must let through 25% or more of the light, reflect 25% or less, and be any color but red, blue or amber.

25% or lighter

Front side windows

The windows either side of the driver, wing vents included, need film and glass together to let through 25% or more of the light and reflect 25% or less. Factory glass already holds some light back, so the reading is taken through both. 35%, 50% and 70% are the shades to look at here.

Any shade

Rear side windows

Every side window behind the driver can take any shade, on cars, trucks, SUVs and vans alike. 5%, 15% and 20% all belong here, and so does anything lighter.

Any shade

Back window

The back glass can take any shade as long as the vehicle has an outside mirror on each side, giving the driver a view of the road at least 200 feet behind. Most vehicles already do.

Medical exemption. Texas law gives a defense when the driver, or a passenger in the vehicle at the time, must be shielded from direct sun for a medical reason. The Texas Department of Public Safety asks for a signed statement from a licensed physician or optometrist, kept in the vehicle. Tell us about it when you ask for your price.

Texas Transportation Code §547.613, Restrictions on Windows, with §547.609 for the label: statutes.capitol.texas.gov (read October 7, 2026). A plain-words guide, not legal advice; where they differ, the statute governs.

QuestionsTexas tint law questions

The front side windows need film and glass together to let through 25% or more of the light and reflect 25% or less. Factory glass already blocks some light, so a 35% film reads darker once it’s on. We check the reading on your own glass before cutting.
